Summer
Summer in Wangaratta is the perfect time to relax and enjoy with a summer picnic in King George Gardens or enjoy a hit of tennis in the tranquil Merriwa Park, surrounded by lush gardens.
To cool off, head to one of the many swimming spots around the region including the King River in Moyhu, Lake William Hovell – peaceful, secluded and pristine surrounded by bushland, and Cheshunt where there are some shallow pools surrounded by grassed areas, perfect for dipping your toes in.
Or if you are after somewhere closer to town, check out the pools at the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre including the Splash Pad – perfect to keep the kids entertained!
Camping is a popular activity in Summer and there are plenty of caravan parks located throughout the municipality offering comfortable and modern facilities.
If bush camping is more your style there are a number of camp sites along the rivers or for a spot of bird watching, twitchers can enjoy exploring the national parks and rivers which are home to a variety of woodland birds.
To get out and see more of the region, grab your hiking boots and explore some of Victoria’s most ruggedly beautiful walking tracks including the challenging Mt Cobbler Walking Track, or just as spectacular but much shorter Powers Lookout where after taking in stunning views you can cool off in the nearby waterhole set amongst rocky ledges and bushland.
Keep the kids entertained during summer school holidays, with popular activities including a cool dip at Northern Beaches, the excitement of beating the bucket tip over at the Wangaratta Splash Park or try your luck gold panning on Reedy Creek in Eldorado.
